International Olympic Committee sets deadline for Indian Olympic Association on tainted rule

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday refused to lift the suspension on the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), in force since December last year, and gave the Indian body a new deadline to set its house in order, asking it to seize the golden opportunity to implement the basic principles of good governance, ethics and integrity.
At its executive board meeting in Buenos Aires, IOC asked the Indian body to meet before October 31 and suitably amend its constitution. The parent body wants IOA to frame rules that would disqualify any person charged in court for a criminal or corruption-related case, from running for office. Once this revised constitution is approved, the world body said IOA could go for elections before December 15.

Now, a video game that makes old brains act younger

There may be a new market for video games: octogenarians. Some people as old as 80, the researchers say, begin to show neurological patterns of people in their 20s. Cognitive scientists say the findings, to be published on Thursday in the scientific journal Nature, are a significant development in understanding how to strengthen older brains. That is because the improvements in brain performance did not come just within the game but were shown outside the game in other cognitive tasks as well. For Full Read News

Government, opposition close ranks to corner judiciary

Government and opposition in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday presented a joint front to indict judiciary on diverse counts — from corruption, favouritism and nepotism to compromises due to lust of post-retirement jobs and benefits — as they approved a bill which seeks to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges. The Constitution amendment ending judiciary's monopoly in appointing judges by giving executive a crucial role was finally passed as BJP members walked out protesting against the government's refusal to send the proposed legislation to standing committee for wider consultations. But the protest by the principal opposition did not take away from the near-total convergence on ending judiciary's prerogative in appointments of the Chief Justice of India, and the judges of the Supreme Court and high courts. World credibility on line over Syria

Shame on you, cowardly world! may well paraphrase President Barack Obamas feelings.
Amid almost universal reservations about US military strikes against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons,Obama took his case to the global stage, telling an international audience while on a stop over in Sweden, that the worlds credibility is on the line if it did not respond to Syrias use of chemical weapons, and that it was not he personally, but the international community that set a red line on the matter. In his most forceful argument to date on world stage,Obama, who is on his way to the G-20 summit in St Petersburg, almost taunted the world community by asking,Are we going to find a reason not to act And if thats the case,I think the world community should admit it. He explained that the world, not he personally, set a red line when governments representing 98% of the worlds population said the use of chemical arms are abhorrent and passed a treaty forbidding their use, even when countries are engaged in war. for full read...

Delhi Yamuna river takes shine off govt’s record

On a day the Congress set out to project Delhi's development over three terms as a poll plank for the assembly polls in November, chief minister Sheila Dikshit's show of prosperity lost lustre before the filth laden Yamuna. Admitting that 15 years later she felt dissatisfied with the condition of the river, the CM sought a fourth term to make the mark. It was the launch of the report on the government's achievements over 15 years and the CM found herself in a tight spot on the issues of pollution in the Yamuna and the gap in the water availability for the capital. She cited the water sharing dispute with Haryana as a hurdle in boosting water supply. About the Yamuna she said, "I am not satisfied with the condition of the river. . We must take measures so that the sewage of the city does not contaminate it. The interceptor sewer project is likely to be completed soon and should make a difference. We will set the river right in the next five years in power". for more read...

CAG slams ASI for neglect of world heritage sites

Neglect of world heritage sites and lack of an updated conservation policy are some of the main complaints against the Archaeological Survey of India in a recent CAG report. The report also says that ASI does not have a database for the total number of antiquities in its possession and 95% of artifacts in museums have never been on display. Since world heritage sites generate maximum revenue for ASI, they should have more visitor facilities, better conservation and improved security, the CAG report says. India has 19 world heritage sites of which three are in Delhi. However, it has been found that basic measures for security are missing as are public amenities. Encroachments and unauthorized constructions are rampant. for full read....

Asha' is new the hope for Microsoft

Microsoft-Nokia may never reach the market share highs that Nokia saw in India-it was 56% in 2008-but the merged entity stands a good chance of arresting the fall (the share is now down to 27%) and making gains in the mid and upper segments of the mobile phone market. Most analysts don't think Microsoft will bother about the low-end of the feature phone segment, where margins are very low and local players like Micromax and Karbonn have proved too competitive for Nokia. This market remains big in India, and so long as it remains big and Microsoft does not play significantly in it, the company's share in the overall market will stay low. The big opportunity that Microsoft perhaps sees is in the mid- and upper-end, where it has the Asha and the Windows-based Lumia brands. for more read...

SOL final results not out, admissions cancelled

There seems to be no end to the problems Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) students.
A number of students who had taken provisional admission in Master’s degree courses in Delhi University were shocked to see their admissions cancelled after the authorities found out that their graduation results had yet not been declared. The fate of these students now hangs in the balance as their results are not expected to come out till October at least. While both the SOL and the postgraduation departments come under the same university, there is no coordination between both the bodies, leaving the students to face the same problem each year. “The fact that results have not been declared is not our fault. It is the failure of the examination branch. Why should the students pay the price for the lackadaisical attitude of the university?” said a student. The problem of delayed results leading to problems for students is not new. Last year, a number of law students had faced the same problem after which DU was forced to extend the deadline for the submission of graduation marksheets. for more read...

AG forwards Rank Pay case to Law Ministry from Defence Ministry

May be two decades are not enough for veterans and widows to get their dues. In what will certainly cause heartburn among the members of the veterans and war widows' community, there is set to be another delay in implementing the long-overdue Rank Pay case. It was reliably learnt that the ball which was lobbed by Defence Minister AK Antony in the court of Attorney General (AG) Goolam Vahanvati in June, has now been further lobbed into the court of Law Ministry by the AG, last week. This action was in response to the approach made to the AG's office by the Ministry of Defence (MoD ), last month, to provide legal guidance on Rank Pay case implementation, decided upon by the Supreme Court (SC). Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne, this year, had written twice to the Defence Minister AK Antony, informing him of the anomalies emanating out of the MoD's inaction. His letters, written in January and May, also highlighted the angst setting in among the veteran community over the inordinate delay in implementing what the Supreme Court had ruled last year. Headlines Today had first reported on this with a copy of all the correspondence between the Air Chief and Defence Minister.  for more read...
