Asha' is new the hope for Microsoft

Microsoft-Nokia may never reach the market share highs that Nokia saw in India-it was 56% in 2008-but the merged entity stands a good chance of arresting the fall (the share is now down to 27%) and making gains in the mid and upper segments of the mobile phone market. Most analysts don't think Microsoft will bother about the low-end of the feature phone segment, where margins are very low and local players like Micromax and Karbonn have proved too competitive for Nokia. This market remains big in India, and so long as it remains big and Microsoft does not play significantly in it, the company's share in the overall market will stay low. The big opportunity that Microsoft perhaps sees is in the mid- and upper-end, where it has the Asha and the Windows-based Lumia brands. for more read...

Goldman cuts India's growth forecast

On a day that rupee fell sharply and stocks tumbled in another major sell-off caused by uncertainty in the Middle East, Goldman Sachs predicted that rupee was likely to reach Rs. 72 per dollar in six months’ time.
"In India, we have cut our full-year GDP growth forecast to 4%, from 6%,” Goldman Sachs said in a research note. It added that the rupee was likely to reach 72 per dollar in six months' time, recovering to R70 over a 12-month horizon. Goldman Sachs said there was a risk of "near-term overshooting of our targets if economic and financing conditions worsen, and especially if there are pressures on the banking and corporate sectors due to weakness in growth". for more read...

SOL final results not out, admissions cancelled

There seems to be no end to the problems Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) students.
A number of students who had taken provisional admission in Master’s degree courses in Delhi University were shocked to see their admissions cancelled after the authorities found out that their graduation results had yet not been declared. The fate of these students now hangs in the balance as their results are not expected to come out till October at least. While both the SOL and the postgraduation departments come under the same university, there is no coordination between both the bodies, leaving the students to face the same problem each year. “The fact that results have not been declared is not our fault. It is the failure of the examination branch. Why should the students pay the price for the lackadaisical attitude of the university?” said a student. The problem of delayed results leading to problems for students is not new. Last year, a number of law students had faced the same problem after which DU was forced to extend the deadline for the submission of graduation marksheets. for more read...
